I have the privilege of reviewing books for Book Sneeze. I read many books, nearly 70 a year, but It is rare one makes such an impact on my personal life.
One Big Thing: Discovering What You Were Born to Do by Phil Cooke did just that.
His premise plays off our multi-tasking, jack of all trades culture. While trying many various things, does work for a season, eventually we realize we cannot be good at everything.
And we likely can only be great at One Big Thing.
I appreciate Cooke’s balanced approach to this matter. He does not advocate your one thing is all you do. We still keep being faithful in the little things. But, we can devote a higher percentage of our effort to that one thing.
A portion of the book I particularly enjoyed was a section where he asked for questions designed to help determine what that One Big Thing is. The questions are:
1. What comes easy for you?
What has God gifted you in? Our talents can often reveal what God created us to do.
2. What do you love?
If someone held a gun to your head and said you could only write or preach on one thing for the rest of your life what would that be?
What is your filter? You don’t have to stop preaching or writing on a wide variety of topics, but is there a filter that everything runs through?
He used the example of Jack Hayford. He preached brilliantly in many areas, but his filter always returned to the area of worship.
3. What drives you crazy?
The thing you hate the most could be problem you were born to fix.
4. What do you want to leave behind?
Sometimes pursuit of the One Big Thing requires us to cut back on good things to focus on The One Thing.
This book inspired me and confirmed something I already knew.
As many of you reading will know, my One Big Thing is Grace. It is the message I both need to hear and love to share.
There is no doubt in my mind I will share this truth for the rest of the my life, even without a gun to my head!
