Grace When You Disagree

February 20, 2017

It seems there are more opportunities for division and disagreement right now than ever.

Many world events have caused Christians to take opposite sides on issues.

The recent election in the USA
The worldwide issues with refugees and immigrants
A global fear of the foreigner.

There are those embracing terms like evangelical and inclusive, while at the same time others are fleeing them.

Economic Disparity
Racism
Moral debates

Being unified as a church is harder than ever.

The apostle Paul had some experience in these areas.

He needed to bring together the arch enemies of the Jews and the Gentiles in the church of Rome. This required dealing with moral and cultural issues.

The church in Corinth was divided over spiritual gifts, freedom in Christ, and lawsuits to name a few.

I am blogging from Atlanta, Georgia at the Catalyst 2014 Conference. I have been asked to serve as a part of the Blogger Team at Catalyst!

Reggie Joiner is sharing in the opening session of the LABS day.

If we only have so many years left, what do I want to invest my time in? Reggie shared about having two of his daughters get married in last few months which caused him to reflect on what is important.

What he wants his kids to know:
– You can know God
– Understand what it means to become a Christian in a moment
– Bible is all true
– Trust leads to stronger faith
– You should enjoy going to church
– Your beliefs matter
– God has an ideal for your life. The closer you move towards this the sweeter your life will be.
– God is Good

Is God a God of Justice or Grace?

We often wrestle with these two seemingly opposite traits within our Father. Different Scriptures seem to show each perspective. Sometimes we feel like we are reading about two different gods who are at war. We usually end up choosing one at the expense of another.

  • If there are no consequences (justice), than it is sloppy agape.
  • How could a loving God send someone to Hell?
  • How can God be good with so much suffering in the world?
  • If you show people grace, they will sin more!

Books have been written.
Theological viewpoints formed.
The battle line have been drawn.
As they fight, which attribute will win?

This is necessary if God is like us.

We cannot be just and merciful at the same time. We choose one or the other.
