The End May Not Be Near

February 10, 2014

The end may not be near.

Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s I was bombarded with predictions and prophecies about the end of the world. I was on the tale end of the The Late Great Planet Earth by Hal Lindsey craze and on the front end of the Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth’s Last Days by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins hoopla.

I’ve seen multiple predictions about the 2nd coming come and go.

What if the end times may not happen in our lifetime? Or another hundred lifetimes for that matter.

Richard Abanes, in his fascinating book, End-Time Visions: The Road to Armageddon, details how every generation from Christ til the present day have thought they were the ones to see the return of Christ.

So far they have all been wrong.

Dirty God

January 4, 2014

I just finished up Dirty God: Jesus in the Trenches by Johnnie Moore as my first book of 2014. Moore is the Vice President of Liberty University. This is a great book which combines the truth of grace with the “putting action to your faith” the Bible calls us to.

One of the first points which jumped out to me was Moore’s observation that Christians are often more concerned with holiness than happiness.

He says, “Christians might be thought of as holy, but they’re not always thought of as very happy.Does Jesus want us to be happy or holy?”

C.S. Lewis once wrote, “It is a Christian duty, as you know, for everyone to be as happy as he can.”

“God’s grace ought to make us happy people, period.”

“In Jesus’ time, happiness meant the virtue of having joy and satisfaction with your place in life.”

I am a single parent……for three more days!

My wife has been away at a missions conference for 12 days now. I am often the one in the family who travels, so this is not a whine fest. I have truly gained an appreciation for single parents over these two weeks.

I’ve been the one who feeds my hungry boys their meals and multiples snacks. I became skilled at packing lunches and organizing school bags. The amount of hours that I have logged in transit this week alone could have been spent writing several blog posts!

At the end of each day I found myself worn out, but not having many checks on my to do list to show for it. I’ve turned into an “even earlier to bed man” than normal!
