God’s Perfect Plan

November 19, 2014

Is there a perfect plan of God for our lives?

I’ve heard many things along these lines through the years.

  • “The good is the enemy of best.”
  • “Don’t settle for second best in your life.”
  • “Compromise will limit your effectiveness and take you out of His Will”

This doesn’t even begin to consider the search for our spouse, the match made in heaven.

With this thinking comes a great deal of pressure and fear.

The implication is that unless we perfectly discern the will of God for our lives we end up in some alternate universe.

We endeavor to crack the mystery through prayer, godly counsel, and the ever-present laying of fleeces.

I literally know people who have been paralyzed with fear of their next decision derailing his Divine Plan. They could not even get out of bed.

Stay in Your Lane

October 4, 2014

The past few days I’ve been blogging from Atlanta, Georgia at the Catalyst 2014 Conference. The conference has finished, but with so much truth to chew on we need time to process it all.

Every year Catalyst introduces me to a speaker which I have not previously heard, but gives a message which resonates with my heart. This year that speaker was Robert Madu. His message has been churning in my heart ever since.

Robert is the Evangelist and Teaching Pastor from Trinity Church in Dallas, Texas. He spoke out of the following two passages:

Hebrews 12:1-2 – God has set a race before each and everyone one of us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus who initiates and perfects our faith.
1 Samuel 18:5-9 – Saul became jealous of David based on a comparison made between them. He took his eyes off of his own race.

As we seek to follow God, ultimately queries about being in His will come up. What does God want me to do with my life?

We engage in a lot of activities to discern the direction of the Almighty.

  • We ask.
  • We look at all life’s circumstances and try to discern the best path.
  • We set out “fleeces” saying things like, “God if you do this (or that) then I will know this is right.”

Sometimes our methods turn into downright manipulation or magic.

A little seeking, a bit of fasting, some prayer and wise counsel, and “Poof” we know His Will.
We attempt to make deals with God saying, “God if you show me this I will live for you forever!”

No amount of deal brokering is foolproof. There are no magic spells consisting of good works which always produce the desired result.

This is a series of posts on NoSuperHeroes based on the Top Questions I receive in my Grace Seminars. Come back each day to see how we answer our questions without changing the message of Grace!

Top Question: I’m afraid of Judgment Day. What will happen when I stand before God?

As I grew up, I heard sensational stories of Judgment Day. One particularly memorable version has believers who appear before the Judgment seat of God. Behind the Lord, is a giant TV screen that will show every action, thought, word, and attitude.

Well, we know this is a bleak picture. It sends tremors of fear through our bodies. An altar call is given at the youth rally and people tremble fearfully into the kingdom.

Effective, but misguided.
